Our Current Seminar: Transforming Organizational Culture: A Leadership Imperative!
The latest research on workplace health provides a compelling case for the need to reexamine managerial practices at all levels. The literature clearly suggests that changes in organizational culture, management practices and style can eliminate or reduce the exposure to and effects from organizational stressors in the workplace.
It is imperative that employers and senior and middle managers be informed of how this research can be used to transform their leadership and management practices. This seminar is a first step towards that transformation and serves as a bridge between the research and practice.
This session addresses the social side of management. It will explore how managerial practices can enhance the emotional/physical health of their employees and staff morale, thus, influencing job satisfaction, performance, recruitment and retention, and overall organizational performance. Managing for `capacity building' will be examined as well as how it can offer possible solutions to the problems of poor morale, ailing social environments, increasing health benefit costs and recruitment and retention difficulties in the workplace. The focus will be on building strong employment relationships which foster a working environment that promotes fairness, learning and development, and work-life balance as a powerful strategy for retention.
Through experiential exercises participants will discover key ingredients of supportive work environments. It will be demonstrated that solutions and strategies exist in all workplaces which can improve employment relationships and will ultimately enhance the mental and physical well-being for front-line workers as well as managers. Participants will gain an understanding of how to bring the human side to management, thereby serving as catalysts for practical change within their workplace.

| | Managers Make the Difference
In recent years, work-life research, done in a variety of settings, has consistently shown that a supportive manager is more valued by employees than anything else the organization can offer. Findings from a large-scale analysis of employee survey data noted,
"We discovered that the manager -not pay, benefits, perks or a charismatic corporate leader - was the critical player in building a strong workplace. The manager was key."
As many management experts are now asserting, this data suggests that if organizations take steps to entrench a "supportive manager" concept in their corporate environments, and if they help managers to develop the appropriate people skills to make this happen, the payoff, in terms of performance and retention of key talent, will be significant.
